Fuse Interview ft Royce da 5'9", DJ Premier and Adrian Younge

Royce da 5'9", DJ Premier and Adrian Younge all put their heads together to make the first ever PRhyme record happen, and fun fact: The hip hop super side project has a random connection to Hollywood and the movies.

Here's how it went down: PRhyme, the first album from Premier and Royce's new collaboration, involves samples crafted by Adrian, whose soundtrack for the 2009 film Black Dynamite peaked Premier's interest even though he didn't know who made it at the time. Royce and Premier were initially going to be heading into the studio to work on a Slaughterhouse EP featuring Adrian's music, which DJ Premier initially questioned. 

"At first, I was like, 'Why can't I just do it the way I do it?' which is digging all kinds of various records to make beats," admits Premier. "But he was like, 'Just to do something different.' I was already hip to Adrian because of the Ghostface project that he had done. I do an independent radio show, so I was already playing cuts from that album, but I didn't even know who Adrian was at that time until I heard the Ghostface album. Then Black Dynamite, the film, I was into that, but I didn't even check the credits for who did the music until later. Even when I saw that he did that, it still didn't even register with him being brought up to the project when it was still being pushed."

DJ Premier not only (eventually) noted Adrian's cinematic contributions, but he heard the first song from the album when he was on the way to Diddy's Golden Globes party when Royce sent him the first track layered with vocals and Adrian's music. The Hollywood touch is slight, but the star power's there for this particular collaboration!
